Meet fun-loving Aussie surfer girl Hayley Shaw-McGuinness. Winner of the ‘2015 Aussie Bods’ competition, she’s represented Australia in not one but two sports and has written her very own book! Hayley talks about her accomplishments, her struggles with self-confidence and body image and how she’s got to where she is today!
Well thank you so much! It means a great deal actually, I feel incredibly stoked to have worn the green and gold twice, in whitewater canoe slalom, and as a triathlete! I am not a natural athlete so I had to work so hard to get to that point so It was a dream come true both times.
I actually grew up in Coffs Harbour and that was wonderful as all my family were there, plus it has beautiful beaches. I feel as though the Northern Beaches are the closest thing that Sydney has to a coastal town. It feels like home now and I doubt I will ever leave here I love it so much!
All jokes aside It probably wasn’t until we moved to Sydney and I started doing whitewater canoeing that I felt like I found my way. My Mum and Step Dad Rob were always so encouraging and really taught me to believe in myself and showed me that even if you’re a little weird its ok. I also had a friend Aaron who told me one day “who cares what anyone thinks Hayles, as long as you are happy that’s all that matters” He said this to me as he was wearing UGG boots and leopard print board shorts in the shopping center at Penrith and I was like YEAH as Oprah would say it was a Ahah moment!!!!!!!!
I still don’t really believe it actually but it was such a great prize to win with such an amazing company! I was smiling for days after finding out! I guess it’s also a pat on the back, which always feels good.
That was the best thing about this competition was the ability to hopefully inspire other women to live a healthy active life! Its not about having the perfect body or comparing yourself to others. Health to me is not about dieting and not training in the gym for hours, its about making healthy choices everyday with the food to fuel your body with and being active as much as possible in as many fun ways as possible!
I would say it is to LOVE yourself ! I want women and girls to feel good about themselves and be happy in the skin that they are in. I am not perfect by any means. I have lip hair that grows faster than you could even imagine, and I have cellulite that just wont go away no matter how much I run or exercise. I have a zillion freckles on my face, but you know what, I wouldn’t change it all because those things make me who I am and I don’t want to waste my life trying to change or compare myself to others. Such a cliché but as they say true beauty comes from within and there is nothing more beautiful that a women who is kind but confident, generous and courageous …this is the stuff glows from your skin and shines through your eyes!
I wrote it for all the above reasons. The pressure placed on young girls through social media and through life are crazy! They are in such a hurry to grow up and I just wanted to share some stuff that I learnt along the way with young girls that could be struggling with similar things I struggled with. It’s really a manual for growing up with a balanced life in all areas.
Thank you so much. It is super scary putting yourself out there like that but I love that I have a voice (even if it’s a little one) When I get lovely emails from young girls that have read something on there that has helped them or inspired them that’s what its all about!
Um Yes I am a sunshine, rainbow and wave chaser! The Maldives is the most epic spot for all 3 of those things! I ride a longboard and by no means a good surfer but I love surfing so much and mostly I love waves like the Maldives offers..perfect pealers in the sunshine. Every trip I have done to the Maldives I have made friendships that will last a lifetime and if anything I have this magical place to thank for that.
I love staying at Lohis cos the beautiful Amy and Richard Kotch are the surf guides there. But my fave wave is Ninjas (which is opposite Lohis ) It’s a gentle and fun right that makes me smile so dang BIG (oh to be there right now!)
Try lots of different sports and activities until you find one that lights you up like a Christmas tree! Surfing is that for me as I get to share sunrise in the ocean each day with my bestfriends. However there are so many cool sports and activites out there try them all…its fun being totally unco at something new esp when you are with friends! Just don’t stop looking, because everything you try presents new opportunities.
Basically my insta is a visual diary of my life. I want people to smile and feel happy and positive at whatever I post. Sure I have times where I cry and feel down but I don’t want my sad times to effect others. Mum calls it the Pollyanna effect. You have a choice about how to feel in every situation. I choose to look for the good and fun in everything.
Set yourself up for success – by saying that I mean, make a plan! Don’t just say I want to be fit, I want to go on holidays make a plan to get yourself to where you want to be and go for it! Meal prep on a Sunday if you want to have a healthy food week, make a savings plan if you want to go overseas. Also tell a few other trusted friends about your dreams and goals so they can encourage you and remind you to stay on your path! Don’t stop!
